Professional Development Opportunities
Working with Respect - Offered by Persistence Theatre Company WORKING WITH RESPECT is a workshop offered for the arts sector in Newfoundland and Labrador. In this 3.5 hour workshop, tools and tips, including legislation, are highlighted for employers (including board members), artists, and cultural workers to create and maintain a respectful workplace. This workshop explores with participants how to best deal with harassment situations through discussions of what IS and IS NOT a respectful workplace, a review of situations and scenarios to identify how to create and sustain a respectful workplace, an in-depth consideration of the roles of employers, artists, and cultural workers in establishing and maintaining a respectful workplace and provincial legislation discussion and definitions re: harassment and bullying. Facilitator: Jenn Deon is an artist, administrator, accredited business communicator (ABC), public speaker and facilitator based in St. John’s, NL. Jenn has been facilitating workshops across Canada and the United States in Maintaining Respectful Workplaces since availing of training and resources from the Cultural Human Resources Council of Canada in 2018. Jenn also shares her expertise in the areas of strategic planning, institutional marketing, community building, partnership development and fundraising. In 2013, Jenn was a recipient of a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for her community involvement, and in 2018, the Woman of Distinction Award for Arts & Culture from the YWCA St. John's. Jenn was also a nominee for the 2020 and 2022 Human Rights Award from the NL Human Rights Commission, and was a national finalist for the 2023 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards. Jenn currently works as the producing artistic director of the PerSIStence Theatre Company, a feminist charity, and volunteers as the chair of the Shakespeare by the Sea Festival. |
In this workshop, Julian will go over cue sheets, cue calling and rehearsals. It's an amazing opportunity for stage managers in their early stages of career or for anyone interested in stage management but without experience. Facilitator: Julian Smith is a Manager and Designer originally from Norman's Cove Newfoundland but now residing in Montreal Quebec and a graduate of the Production Design and Technical Arts Program. Workshops for actors (Acting, Movement and Voice) - offered by TODOS Productions and White Rooster Theatre Description: Each workshop will cover some basics of acting, movement and voice. These workshops are designed for actors in the early stages of their career. No previous experience or knowledge is required! a) Voice Workshop for Actors with Ana Luisa Ramos Facilitators: Ana Luísa Ramos’ is an award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter based in St. John's, Canada. Her sophomore album Amanheceu earned her the 2021 MusicNL Jazz Artist of the Year award and a nomination for Global Artist of the Year. Her most recent single Clouds is a nostalgic upbeat song that speaks of long roads, vast horizons, new beginnings, and unconditional love. Ana´s music is influenced by Brazilian Bossa Nova composers, such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, and the greatest of North American Jazz, such as Ella Fitzgerald. The thoughtful lyrics and beautiful arrangements combine to create a unique and contemporary sound in which the Brazilian tropical sun is reflected on the stormy and windy landscapes of Newfoundland. For the last two decades, Ana has been working in the classical and popular fields and has performed in Europe, South, Central, and North America. Throughout her career, she has recorded over 15 albums for different projects. In 2016 Ana released her first solo album, entitled Um, which was followed by Amanheceu, released in 2021. Ana has also actively worked on her project with singer-songwriter Eric Taylor Escudero, Ana & Eric. The duo released their debut self-titled EP through The Citadel House in November 2020 and Our House From Here, which earned them three 2023 MusicNL nominations and one 2024 ECMAs nomination. Ana´s new album Solaris, recorded in Brazil, Canada and USA, will be released on April 19, 2024. b) Acting Workshop with Azal Dosanjh Facilitator: Azal Dosanjh is a theatre artist from India, now residing in St. John’s, Newfoundland. They direct, write, and produce - always keeping the goal of connecting communities at the centre of their practice. c) Acting Workshop with Vanessa Cardoso-Whelan Facilitator: Vanessa Cardoso-Whelan (she-her) is a playwright, multidisciplinary artist, street performer and clown from Brazil, with a passion for contemporary theatre and body movement awareness, especially related to Flamenco dancing. Graduating in Theatre Arts in 2004, she has performed with several artistic groups onstage and in street productions, as an actress, Flamenco dancer, puppeteer and fire flow dancer. Vanessa has been actively engaged in the local arts scene since moving to NL in 2014, participating in diverse artistic workshops and festivals. Currently wearing different hats she’s involved in theatre productions, Tv shows, dance adventures and clown studies. Vanessa also loves to perform as a Living Statue in the streets when the weather is nice. |
