Contracted Position
The St. John’s Short Play Festival, by St. John’s Shorts Inc., is a festival of independent theatre in St. John’s, Newfoundland. We are an incorporated not-for-profit with the goal of creating an accessible opportunity to produce challenging and artistically stimulating theatre in a safe and collaborative environment.
St. John's Shorts Inc. is seeking an experienced arts professional for the position of Artistic Director to lead the organization into its next exciting phase.
Salary: $2000*
Working Location: St. John’s, NL (in-person preferred, but semi-remote option available)
Time Commitment: Part-time and casual (100 hours at 20/hr) from February 1st - March 22nd (with option to extend dependent on funding. If grant funding is acquired the payment would be up to $10,000, 40 week term. If funding is not acquired the person in this position will be offered the Festival Producer role which includes more pay)

Responsibilities:
Artistic Leadership
- Uphold and enhance the artistic vision and values of St. John's Shorts Inc.
- Represent the St. John’s Shorts Inc. as a spokesperson and point of contact;
- Foster a positive organizational culture, prioritizing equity, inclusivity, respect, and collaboration.
- Develop and produce a compelling and diverse annual artistic vision in line with our mandate:
- -To create a space for original works of theatre by local artists, as well as other works, classical or contemporary.
- -To make theatre accessible, safe, and affordable.
- -To facilitate collaboration and sharing of resources between independent theatre companies in St. John’s.
- -To create a space for St John’s theatre artists to practice, develop, explore and refine their craft. This space includes, but is not limited to, the annual St. John's Short Play Festival.
- -To strengthen our community of St. John’s theatre artists and support all theatre practitioners, especially those from marginalized and equity-deserving groups, including but not limited to BIPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+, individuals who are Deaf or disabled-identified, and individuals who are living with a mental illness.
Operational Oversight
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors and staff, ensuring clear communication and alignment with organizational goals.
- Oversee company operations with support from the Board. These duties will include financial management, budget creation, grant writing, and reporting.
- Ensure sound fiscal management. Track expenses and revenues in accordance with the budget provide timely reporting.
- Listen to and acknowledge guidance from the Board of Directors
- Engage participants and the public in community-building events.
- Develop and implement professional development opportunities for participants and the public.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with community stakeholders, artists, sponsors, and other relevant organizations.
- Identify and create partnerships that support the company's mandate.
Marketing and Communications
- Collaborate with the Board and Assistant Festival Producer on the promotion of events and workshops.
- Actively participate in marketing and advertising efforts to enhance the company's visibility.
Qualifications:
- Proven track record of successful artistic production, festival planning, or company management.
- Familiarity with The Short Play Festival and its mandate.
- Strong strategic thinking, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Previous experience in an artistic leadership position, preferably in performing arts.
- The ability to be independently creative and productive.
- Experience in grant writing and reporting processes (familiarity with ArtsNL, Canada Council, and Canadian Heritage considered an asset).
- Proficiency in graphic design software and social media platforms is considered an asset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortability with public speaking and engagement with media and stakeholders;
- Flexible on working hours to allow for event and activity attendance, including evenings and weekends.
